Have questions about the PTO?
You are not alone!
What is the PTO?
The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a group of parents, and teachers who volunteer their time to support students, staff, and families. We raise funds, organize events, and build community at Coleman Elementary.
How is the PTO different from the PTA?
Unlike the PTA, our PTO is an independent, school-based group. We’re not affiliated with a national organization, which means 100% of the money raised stays at Coleman.
Is there a fundraising goal for the year?
Yes, each year we set a goal to fund next school year.
Where does the money go?
Funds raised by the PTO pay for enrichment programs (Art, Music, Reading Intervention, Field Trips) and other vital classroom resources, events, and supplies that aren’t fully covered by the state or federal government.
Do I have to pay dues to join?
Nope!
Do I need to volunteer a lot of time?
Not at all. Every bit of help makes a difference whether it’s bringing snacks to an event, helping with one fundraiser, or serving in a longer-term role. Many PTO positions can even be shared between two people.
Can I share a role with another parent?
Yes! Roles can be co-chaired, which helps balance responsibilities and makes volunteering more manageable.
How can I stay updated?
You can read our weekly PTO newsletter, check ParentSquare, visit this website, or follow us on social media for updates.
What if I don’t know anyone yet?
That’s okay, PTO is actually one of the best ways to meet other parents and feel part of the school community. You’ll get to know families across all grades.
Do you meet regularly?
Yes! We meet every first Wednesday of the month. We usually meet via Zoom but sometimes we hold meetings in person at the school.
Are meetings in English only?
Most meetings are in English, but we do our best to share notes and updates in Spanish too. If you need translation support, let us know — we want every family to feel included.
What if I can’t attend meetings?
No problem. Agendas & meeting notes are shared afterwards here on our website, and some meetings are offered on Zoom so you can join remotely.
Do I need special skills to help?
Not at all! Whether you’re great at organizing, baking cookies, making flyers, or simply showing up, there’s a place for you. Every talent makes a difference.
What’s the smallest way I can contribute?
Even the little things matter, like helping for one hour at the Book Fair, dropping off snacks for teachers, or sharing an event flyer with friends.
Do I have to commit to a role?
Nope! Roles are helpful, but one-time volunteering is just as valuable. There’s something for every schedule.
What happens if we don’t reach our fundraising goal?
We may have to cut back on certain programs or events. That’s why every donation and volunteer effort helps us keep opportunities alive for our kids.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. The PTO is a registered nonprofit, so your donations are tax deductible.
How do kids benefit directly?
Every dollar raised goes right back to the kids — whether it’s funding art and music classes, making sure field trips happen, or providing extra classroom resources.
