Join a Group at Coleman
Coleman Elementary prides itself on its strong tradition of parent involvement and community-building. Below are a number of groups that invite your participation!
School Site Council: The SSC is a group of elected parents and staff members that assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Single Plan for Student Achievement Program. This plan is written each year to improve instruction, set staff development goals and provide additional funds from the state with which we pay our instructional assistants, purchase instructional materials, and fund advanced teacher training courses. In addition, the SSC reviews the safety plan and facilitates the annual Parent survey in which the results help to guide program improvements. Meetings are held the first Friday of every month. Our annual elections are held during Open house and we are looking for new members for the 2013/2014 school year. If you are interested in learning more, please Contact Us.
SELAC: The School English Learner Advisory Committee is a group of parents, teachers and staff whose main concern is the welfare of the school's English Language Learners. In addition to monthly meetings, SELAC sponsors several events throughout the year, such as movie, Zumba, and game nights.
Coleman Fathers Group: The goal of the Coleman Dads Group is to offer dads from Coleman's diverse school community the opportunity to work together in support of our children's education. We meet monthly and coordinate projects from construction to cooking to fundraising events such as the Crab Feed, Run for the Gold, and the annual Poker Night. In 2010, we were honored by the California School Boards Association (CSBA) with the highly respected Golden Bell award for Parental Community Involvement. Visit their web site here.
Amigos En Coleman: Amigos En Coleman is program to build and strengthen friendships between Coleman families from different cultures. Families can sign up to be paired with another family from a different culture to practice languages, share favorite foods, music, and family traditions and/or pair up during volunteer opportunities. Watch the school bulletin for the next Amigos event!
Coleman Green Team: Our mission is to reduce Coleman’s resource consumption so our impact on the earth is less and to educate our children about conservation. These efforts are continually growing. Most recently, we have seen the addition of a garden off the school yard. Some of the areas of focus for the Green Team are Safe Routes to School, Nutrition and Wellness, Gardening, Recycling, and Cool the Earth. The Green team sponsors a number of activities and events throughout the year, including food movie night with dinner (Fresh, Nourish), nutrition education programs for parents and kids, Earth week activities, Food Day Farmer's Market, and composting. If you are interested in working with the Green Team, please Contact Us.
Angel Network: The Coleman Angel Network is a way for our community to be sure that the basic needs of all our "little tigers" are met. Anonymous angels can make a donation (cash or gift cards preferred) by putting a donation in an envelope marked "Angel Network" and placing it in the mailbox in the office. These envelopes will go to Martha, our Community Liaison, so that when a need is presented to her she will have the resources to fill it. When there is a specific need that cannot be filled from resources mentioned above, we will send a google group email requesting specific items be donated (warm jacket, lunch box, food, etc). If you would like to provide that item, you should respond to the email and let us know. You can then deliver the item to Martha in her office. The child in need and the person who provided the donation will remain confidential.
